The short answerYou cannot buy or guarantee an AI recommendation, but you can make your business easy to find, understand and verify. Complete your Google Business Profile, keep your details consistent, earn recent genuine reviews, answer customers’ questions clearly on your site, add structured data and let AI crawlers in. Then measure the trend, not a single answer.
What AI is actually doing
When someone asks an assistant “which day care in Chilliwack is best?” it draws on web pages, business listings, reviews and other sources, then writes an answer. Different assistants use different sources, and the same assistant can answer differently each time. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 40% of US consumers trust AI platforms for business recommendations, so the answer matters, but there is no single switch to flip.
The eight things you control
1. Complete and verify your Google Business Profile
It is the most-cited source in AI local answers. Choose the right primary category, add services, hours, photos and a clear description. Our profile guide walks through it.
2. Keep your details identical everywhere
Name, address, phone and hours should match on your site, Google, Yelp, Facebook, Apple and the directories in your industry. Conflicts make assistants unsure.
3. Earn recent, genuine reviews
BrightLocal found 47% of consumers will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews and 74% only consider reviews from the last three months. Ask every customer and reply to each review. Never offer incentives for reviews.
4. Answer questions directly on your site
Write pages and FAQs that put the answer in the first sentence: prices ranges, services, who you serve, where you are, how to book.
5. Add structured data
Mark up your business, services, hours and FAQs so machines read them accurately.
6. Let crawlers in
Many sites block AI crawlers by accident. Check robots.txt and consider an llms.txt file, an emerging convention that is not guaranteed to be used.
7. Be present where AI looks
For restaurants that includes Yelp, TripAdvisor and reservation platforms. Citation patterns differ by assistant and industry.
8. Publish real, specific content
Photos, menus, staff, project examples and local detail give assistants something to say about you that is not generic.
How to check where you stand
Write 5 to 10 questions in your customers’ words. Ask each assistant in a private window, signed out. Note whether you are named, described correctly and linked, and who appears instead. Repeat quarterly. Expect your results to differ from anyone else’s: assistants personalise by location and history, so look for the trend. Our free visibility check covers the technical signals, and how we measure explains the rest.
Common mistakes
- Chasing a single “number one” answer instead of the trend.
- Letting an old address or phone number live on a directory.
- Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt and never noticing.
- Paying for fake or incentivised reviews, which breaks platform rules and trust.
- Publishing thin, generic pages that say nothing specific about your business.
