The short answerllms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your website (yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that gives AI tools a short, clean summary of who you are and which pages matter. It is an emerging convention, not an official standard, and no assistant is guaranteed to use it. It takes about ten minutes to add and does no harm, so add one, but do not expect it to replace good pages, accurate listings and genuine reviews.
What it is
The llms.txt idea was proposed in 2024 as a simple, human-readable file written in Markdown. It sits next to your robots.txt and sitemap and points AI tools to a concise description of your business and your most useful pages. Think of it as a short briefing note for a machine reader.
What it is not
- Not an official standard. Adoption varies, and assistants do not all read it.
- Not a ranking factor you can rely on. We have no evidence that adding one guarantees a recommendation.
- Not a substitute for robots.txt, a sitemap, structured data or good content.
What to put in it
- The business name and a two-sentence description in plain language.
- Where you operate and who you serve.
- Contact details and how to book.
- Links to your most important pages with one line each: services, menu, prices or ranges, FAQs, locations.
- Only facts you can stand behind, and the same facts as your site and Google profile.
How to publish it
Write it in Markdown
A title, a short description, then headed lists of links with a line of context each.
Upload it to your site root
It should load at yourdomain.com/llms.txt as plain text.
Then check the fundamentals with our AI visibility checklist or run the free scan.
